Key Achievements
- There are 190 Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission sites across all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana.
- Under the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the Ministry of Public Health has been able to achieve a vaccination coverage of over 90% of all antigens given to the under five (5) population.
- In 2014, Guyana placed 3rd out of 74 countries for effective management of vaccines.
- Seventy-five percent (75%) of all medical practitioners have been trained in ALARMS (Emergency Obstetrics Training).
- Over the past five years, 90% of births have been occurring in Health institutions, indicating a reduction in home births.
- At least 60% of primary healthcare professionals have been trained in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses.
- In collaboration with the Guyana Help the Kids (GHTK) Charity, we have opened six Neon-natal Intensive Care Units (NICU’s) across the country – Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), West Demerara Regional Hospital, Bartica Regional Hospital, Suddie Regional Hospital, New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and the Linden Hospital Complex.
- Under the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the Ministry currently administers vaccines for 17 antigens: Whooping Cough, Measles, Poliomyelitis, Tuberculosis, Yellow Fever, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Mumps, Rubella, Haemophilus Influenza Type b, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcal, Meningococcal, Human Pappiloma Virus, Varicella, Rota Virus and Pertussis.

Objectives
- Provide antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care including family planning services to women.
- Monitor growth and development in children from infancy to the adolescent period.
- Provide vaccination services to pregnant women, children and adults in Guyana.
- Maintain zero infant and childhood/adulthood morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases.
- Establish and monitor standards, procedures and protocols of care including the clarification of roles and responsibilities of the different levels of care.
- Strengthen the health information system, utilizing the data for planning.
- Establish and implement a system for continuous evaluation of Maternal and Child Health Services.
- Monitor trends in newborn, infant, child, adolescent, family and maternal illness with emphasis on malnutrition, anaemia and acute diarrhoeal and respiratory infections.
- Foster and support research in Maternal and Newborn, Infant and Child Health including health systems research.
- Identify training needs of staff involved in the delivery of Maternal and Child Health Services.
- Advise on the introduction of appropriate technology for Maternal and Child Health.
- Re-orient health services on sexual and reproductive health focusing on the involvement of males.
- Increase awareness on women, families and communities to the value of maternal and neo-natal health.

Sub-programmes
1. Expanded Programme on immunization (EPI): provides vaccines for children and adults.
2. Reproductive Family Health Services: Contraceptive and advice on family planning is provided at all levels of the health care delivery system.
3. Women’s Health: More attention would be placed on the issues affecting women’s health.
4. Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV: All mothers enrolling in Antenatal Clinics (ANC) are offered the HIV test as part of their care. Rapid testing of ANC mothers is also done on the labour and postnatal wards for those mothers who did not have HIV testing done.
5. Safe motherhood strategy aims to reduce the deaths and illnesses of women, children and families through a comprehensive approach commencing before pregnancy.
6. Health care of the adolescent and youths by creating adolescent/youth friendly services.
7. Specialized Paediatric and obstetric care which is provided at some regional hospitals and the National Referral Hospital. Medical services are also provided at some health facilities and the hospitals.
8. Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI): a holistic approach to child health which involves assessment, classification, identifying the problem, treatment, follow up and referral of patient. Health workers are taught the basic skills at all levels of care.
9. Community IMCI- the community is taught on basic health care and how to prevent illnesses in the home and the community.
10. HIV component of child health has also been included in the assessment of IMCI.
