Key Responsibility
To work towards the Prevention, Care, Management and eventual eradication of Tuberculosis in Guyana.
Key Accomplishments
- The establishment of 18 Chest Clinics across Guyana (at least 1 in each Region)
- Presence of a GeneXpert Machine at the National Public Health ReferenceLaboratory.
- Renovation of a building to house the TB Step-Down Care Facility for patients with difficult circumstances.
- Refurbishment of the National Tuberculosis Programme’s building along with the establishment of a Conference facility.
- Establishment of a new building specifically engineered for the West Demerara Chest Clinic.
- Building partnerships across all sectors to be engaged in the fight against Tuberculosis.
- Progressive increase in treatment success rate of all forms of TB from 64% in 2010 to 71% in 2015).
Goals/Objectives
- To identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed Tuberculosis disease and ensure appropriate treatment ideally under directly observed therapy.
- To ensure that individuals who are at high risk of infection and disease receive the necessary support services needed to establish the state of their condition.
- To alleviate the suffering and improve the quality of life for persons with chronic disabling pulmonary (lung) condition in a cost effective and efficient manner.
Mission
To reduce the incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis and to mitigate its impact through a multi-sectoral response that provides high quality and equitable prevention, treatment and support services.
