Hon. Dr. Karen Cummings, M.P., MBBS, MPH, B.Sc

Dr. Cummings hails from the ancient county of Berbice and is a graduate of the Bishops’ High School. She holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree in Physics and a Medical Degree (MBBS) from the University of Guyana. Dr. Cummings also holds a Masters of Public Health (MPH) Degree from the St. George’s University, Grenada, and the West Indies; and is currently completing Doctoral Studies in Public Health (DrPH) from Walden University in the United States of America.

She has extensive experience in the Public Service, having held positions such as Government Medical Officer and Doctor in Charge of the David Rose Health Centre, Regional Medical Superintendent of Region 4 and Medical Registrar at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation

Dr. Karen Cummings has been involved in politics for the past 3 years and she first served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2014, where she was powerful voice for gender equality and spoke out against the horrible healthcare conditions in Guyana. As a MP, Dr. Cummings also advocated for holistic health reforms, and better payment for nurses, teachers, policemen, army personnel and retirees. Dr. Cummings has continued to push for improved opportunities for children and mothers, and has been creating waves over early childhood education and entrepreneurship for young Guyanese. On May 24, 2016, Dr. Cummings was asked by the Government to serve as the Minister within the Ministry of Public Health.

Dr. Shamdeo Persaud

The Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Shamdeo is originally from Garden of Eden on the East Bank of Demerara. He attained his secondary education at the Covent Garden Secondary School and the St. Roses High School. Following his secondary school studies, he went on to pursue his Bachelors of Medicine, Bachelors of Surgery at the University of Guyana from 1985- 1992. Dr. Persaud then studied for his Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus , Jamaica from 1998 – 1999.

Previous positions held by Dr. Persaud include Government Medical Officer, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, Regional Health Officer of Region 1, Tuberculosis Control Officer at the West Demerara Regional Hospital and the Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases. He has been the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Public Health since 2007.

Other portfolios held by Dr. Persaud from 2010 to present include Chairman of the Central Board of Health of Guyana, Institutional Review Board, Pharmacy and Poisons Board and President of the Guyana Chest Society.

He is a father of three, two boys and one girl and maintains an active lifestyle, running in the mornings and playing Tennis as well.

Dr. Karen Boyle

Dr. Boyle was born in England but moved to Guyana at the age of 10 with her Family. She attended Saint Stanislaus College then went on to the Bishop’s High School for 6th form, where as a result of her performance at the G.C.E Advanced level Examination, she was awarded the honour of becoming a Guyana Scholar. She I studied Medicine in Moscow, Russia at the People’s Friendship University, graduating in 1990 with a Doctor of medicine Degree M.D. Dr. Boyle then went on to study for her Masters in Public Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University in New York. She pursued her doctorate in Public Health at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Jamaica.

Previous positions held by Dr. Boyle include: Government Medical Officer with the GPHC, Coordinator for the Chronic Disease Programme at the Ministry of Public Health Clinical and Director of HIV Prevention with the USAID. In 2014, January, she was retained by Cicatelli Associates Inc of New York to be their Country representative on the Global Fund project with the Ministry of Public Health’s National Aids Programme Secretariat. She served in that capacity until the conclusion of the project in May, 2016.

In June, 2016, Dr. Boyle assumed office as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Public Health. She serves on the Board of Directors for Demerara Mutual Life Company, Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Alpha and Omega Community Health Associates Inc, EML and the Caribbean Governance Training Institute.

Dr. Boyle has been married for 25 years and has three (3) children, two sons and a daughter.  She along with her husband started a Private Medical Lab and Clinic called the Eureka Medical Laboratory.
