This programme has overall responsibility for the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Guyana. It is comprised of eight sub-programmes, including chronic diseases and surveillance.
The overall programme objectives are protecting the Guyanese population from communicable and non-communicable diseases and breaking the chain of transmission of specific communicable diseases especially the vector borne diseases, TB,HIV/STIs and Hansen’s Disease.
Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases
The overarching goal of the CNCD Programme is to improve the health of the Guyanese population through appropriate prevention, screening and treatment of CNCDs.

Tuberculosis Control Programme

Goals/Objectives
- To identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed tuberculosis disease and ensure appropriate treatment ideally under directly observed therapy.
- To ensure that individuals who are at high risk of infection and disease receive the necessary support services needed to establish the state of their condition
- To alleviate the suffering and improve the quality of life for persons with chronic disabling pulmonary (lung) condition in a cost effective and efficient manner.

Mission
Promote human health by taking steps which minimise the risk of disease transmissible between animal and man (Zoonoses) and from food derived from animals.
General Objectives
- Reduce human suffering and death from the principal diseases transmissible between animals and man – zoonoses
- Prevent human food borne and water borne infections and intoxications
- Improvement of animal health and prevention of economic losses by protecting and ensuring the safety of food supplies
- Promote overall human health and well being through the application of appropriate veterinary skills.
