Dengue Fever

Over the last four weeks the Ministry of Health has noted the increase of reported fever cases from Region 9 especially Lethem. Further investigation reveled that these cases were not due to Malaria and test for Dengue Fever confirmed that some 12 cases were as a result of recent infection with the dengue virus and were among persons in and around Lethem.

The Public is informed that:

  1. Cases occur sporadically in Georgetown and all the costal regions but more so in the Lethem area of Region 9

Further the public is advised that:

  1. Care must be taken to avoid mosquito bites.
    1. The Ministry is recommending the use of mosquito net and if possible insecticide treated nets must be used especially by pregnant women and children under 5 years. Everyone should sleep under a net.
    2. The use of insect repellents can prevent mosquito bites if used as recommended
    3. Use protective clothing especially while being outdoors at night. Avoid dark colors since they attract mosquitoes.
    4. Household sprays and insecticides are useful in reducing mosquitoes in your home. Ensure that they are used as directed.
  2. Reduce the breeding site of mosquitoes in your surroundings by
    1. Eliminating any vessel (empty bottles, used tiers, food boxes etc) that may collect water and serve as a breeding site for especially the dengue Mosquitoes
    2. Clear bushes from at least 3 feet away from your home
    3. Change the water in vases with live plants around you home daily
    4. Keep all drains clear so that waste water can flow.
    5. Drain and fill in swampy and flooded areas around you home.
  3. If you do experience fever, please see your local health worker or visit the nearest health facility immediately.

Remember, dengue is a growing problem in many parts of the Americas and if not control immediately can cause serious health problem. The most effective way of controlling dengue is to eliminate the breeding sites of dengue mosquitoes and avoiding being bitten.
