Sponsor a Child Initiative

The Sponsor a Child Initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Health Chronic Disease Department and the generous assistance of Private Sector which seeks to provide assistance to children living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with the supplies for the management of this condition. The supplies are usually glucometers, glucose test strips, Lancets, prep pads and even insulin.

The objective of the initiative is to alleviate the burden and challenges facing families with regard to the high cost of supplies that limit access to regular testing of blood sugar levels and therefore, managements of this chronic disease with children living with diabetes Type 1. Many of these children have fragile economic situations.

In the initial launch of the Sponsor a Child Initiative, a child or children were selected at random by a company or organization for sponsorship. However, overtime it was suggested that interested potential sponsors be furnished with the cost of one year’s supplies per a child and the total number of children on the initiative. The sponsor would then review the entire cost and determine how much of that cost they are willing to contribute. Presently all contributions have been monetary and will be used to procure supplies and distributed equitably to all the children regardless of their economic background.

The Ministry of Health encourages sponsors not to limit themselves to contribute to the procurement of supplies but also to be involved and assist in other activities such as the annual Diabetes Youth Camp in whatever way they could.

Of course the option to sponsor a specific child/ children is entirely a choice of the sponsor.

Annually Diabetes Youth Camp is held for children living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and their caregivers. This event which was first launched in 2009 and its main objective is to educate children and their caregivers to manage this condition thus reducing susceptibility to other health challenges and risks associated to ensure a better quality of health and life expectancy.

The youth camp benefits each child and adolescent through the following:

  • Providing an opportunity to meet other young people living with juvenile diabetes
  • Discuss challenges and establish a support network
  • Build self esteem, health maintenance skills and independence
  • Lessen the burden of chronic diseases such young children

Children are usually presented with supplies for the management of juvenile diabetes and shown to administer their daily dose of insulin.
